Pity Party, the lead single off of Melanie Martinez’ debut album Crybaby, was certified gold in the U.S recently. The single was released in June 2015, but proceeded to enter the Top 40 on U.S radio this past spring.
The single just earned its gold certification, which means it has sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S, with 150 streams being equivalent to one paid download. Pity Party will be Melanie’s second single to achieve this, after her 2014 single Dollhouse.
Pity Party is one of the most popular songs on the Crybaby album, likely because of its rebellious, independent tone and quotable lyrics. The song is actually sampled from Lesley Gore’s 1963 song It’s My Party. Both share the line “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to”, which makes for a catchy chorus.
Melanie has said that Pity Party marks a turning point for her character Crybaby within the album. When no one shows up to her birthday party, she starts to go slightly crazy, which is especially evident in the next two songs on the album- Tag you’re it and Milk and Cookies.
The self-directed Pity Party music video, with over 55 million views currently, does a wonderful job of telling Crybaby’s story. Complete with the destruction of stuffed animals, cake smashing, and balloon popping, it’s a visual representation of Crybaby’s slow descent into madness.
